Earth Songs: On view March 27 – May 30, 2011

Port Arthur, TX – This spring, the Museum of the Gulf Coast will host a new exhibition featuring the latest series of clay vessels created by renowned ceramic artist Linnis Blanton. Inspired by the rhythms and melodies of Earth’s landscape, Earth Songs consists of high-fired stoneware, slab built and thrown, then altered. As the artist describes them, these vessels “are formed from recycling of earth, wind, fire and water. These elements are the basic materials that transform the thoughts to becoming the timeless images on the vessels surface.”

Earth Songs is hosted in memory of Mrs. Betty Goins, a faithful volunteer at the Museum of the Gulf Coast and a devotee of Blanton’s work. The exhibition will open to the public with a free reception on Sunday, March 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. where the artist will share more about his work.

Earth Songs will remain on view in the Museum’s Dunn Gallery through May 30, 2011 and will inspire a high school art contest. The Museum is calling for ceramic/clay submissions from high school students which will go on view in conjunction with Earth Songs. Works will be judged by Linnis Blanton at the opening reception on March 27. “We feel that Mr. Blanton’s work is the perfect inspiration for a high school competition since he is not only a superb artist but also a beloved teacher,” says Museum director Shannon Harris. Blanton worked for many years as an instructor with the Port Arthur I.S.D. and is now an instructor in the Art Department at Lamar University. Student submissions are due at the Museum by March 18. Those interested should contact the Museum’s education coordinator Megan O’Connor at 409-984-6453.

Earth Songs was made possible in part by a grant from the Southeast Texas Arts Council. The Museum of the Gulf Coast is owned and operated by the Port Arthur Historical Society in partnership with Lamar State College – Port Arthur and the City of Port Arthur. It is located at 700 Procter Street in downtown Port Arthur and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For more information about the Museum please visit www.museumofthegulfcoast.org or call 409.982.7000.
